First created in 2017, this guide is intended to bring awareness and knowledge to users about the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women (MMIW). It includes articles, books, organizations, podcasts, and other resources focused on MMIW.
While this project focuses on missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (including Two Spirit, nonbinary, gender expansive, and trans sisters), we acknowledge the fact that men are also victims and survivors of this crisis. In addition, we honor the missing and murdered Indigenous peoples’ movements around the world, even though this guide focuses on MMIW on Turtle Island, colonially known as North America.
The project was created by Dr. Karla J. Strand, who wanted to use her expertise in gender and women’s studies librarianship to help highlight the MMIW crisis. Dr. Strand has been an academic librarian for over twenty years and is also a writer, historian, and educator. A queer, feminist settler, she is grateful for the Potawatomi and Ho-Chunk land on which she lives and works, and attempts to honor the peoples and animals who have been here long before her through this project and her other research.
Please contact Dr. Strand with questions, suggestions, concerns, or take down requests.
